Patrick's Diary - 3/8/2016

It's International Women's Day but no one celebrated it. Though it's invented in US, just like International Labor's Day, Americans don't observe it because it's the product of Socialism.

My son called me during the day to mention that I could pick him up on next Thursday after work because his last final exam for Winter Quarter would be on next Wednesday. The Spring Break will be the whole week after the next, but the dorm will be open and kids don't need to clear the rooms. However, I will take my son to Oahu as he requested. Reading news on several websites, I was so irritated that vacation sounded so luxury and people treated it like an evil. What are American Dreams? Why did I want to move here? When I was young, I sometimes worked hard for fun but other time, I could watch five soccer matches played across the world on TV a day, or hang with friends for midnight late dinner days-in-row. In addition, I could travel anywhere I wanted unless not being able to get a visa. Now, as an American, I don't need a visa to all those countries I want to visit, but I don't have enough time and money. How funny vacation becomes luxury? By the way, I finally decided to reserve a standard car at Enterprises, so I am going to drive around the island.
Coming back home, I caught Trump winning another big Super Tuesday. Why he accommodates ordinary Americans' desires is to get America great again. Yes, US is still the greatest country in the world, but American Dreams have been discounted year over year. Working 40 hours or even 35 hours may be an European Dream, Americans dream having a more materialistic lifestyle: A bigger house, a larger car, two weeks vacation a year not only hiding in a cabin by the ocean but spending wildly at Disney World. I don't mean Trump to be able to turn this around but whoever the next President of United States should bring the country back on the right track. I don't see any candidate with that potential at this moment. It's a surprise Sanders winning Michigan, which would make Democratic nomination a bit more mysterious. Oh, by the way, I don't mean Europeans still enjoying their dreams, they may have a even worse position now. However, have we heard good news from emerging countries? I don't think so. A global dominant leader must surface.
Markets sold off for another day, I was puzzled by Gopro's 10% drop without reason. It just simply gave up the gains accumulated in the last several days. In the competitive segment of action camera, popularity of brand name is the key. I don't see any other manufacturers being able to promote a beautiful image of theirs as Gopro doing.
