Patrick's Diary - 5/27/2015

After workout at LA Fitness, I just arrived at home a minute ago. Looking out of the window in my study room, I can sense a late spring harmonious night outside, which triggered me to recall a Chinese idiom I often used in my teenager's compositions and diaries - "夜深人静“. Translated into English, it can be "Sky in Darkness & Folks in Dreams". I was just thinking this could be an interesting debate in Comparative Literature: The closest translation of this idiom may be "Dark Night & Silent People", but my take is Night already implies Darkness and People can be silent without sleeping. This is probably why literature is not rocket science, there are a lot of flexibilities in it.
It was a relative longer day for me, I left work for home almost two hours later than usual. Naturally, I was caught in traffic, which had me taking one hour and a half to arrive at home. Actually, I had to get out of the freeway at North Park Business Park to go through local drive because congestion seemed very severe at Canyon Park Business Park where I was supposed to get out to go home. However, under the sunny sky, driving on local roads made me be very enjoyable.

Having a quick dinner, I had slept until 9:30 pm. Getting out to drive to gym, I was totally sweaty at the end.

I pulled some information of driving cost online for our trip to Scandinavia. Let me summaries it before going to bed.

First of all, I pulled the map to figure out the total kilometers I will drive through, it ended up with 3,695.1 on Freeway, added a couple of hundreds on local roads, I would make it 4,000.

Then, I found MPG for Volvo XC60: 24 in City and 31 on Freeway, given 1 mile equals 1.61 Kilo and 1 gallon equals 3.785 liters, I converted the efficiency to KPL:

In City:              24*1.61 = 38.64; so 38.64/3.785 = 10.21
On Freeway:     31*1.61 = 49.91; so 49.91/3.785 = 13.19

With KPL, I figured out how many liters of gas I would need:

3,695.1/13.19 + 304.9/10.21 = 310.1 Liters

Finally, I pulled the price of gas per liter for these five countries:
Total driving cost can be calculated now:

1.6*73.57+1.7*145.67+1.79*49.69+1.9*24.11+2.09*17.01=$535.76

Ok, I wouldn't have energy to double check my logic and computation but will do tomorrow night.

Almost 1 o'clock in the morning on Thursday now, though I slept for 2 hours before going to gym, need to go to bed. Anyway it was a long day for me yesterday, which means it probably will be a short one today, cheers!
