Investment in Manchester United?

Major League Soccer Cup was getting into the second leg of Conference Semifinal weekend. As a super soccer fan, especially of our home team Seattle Sounders, I had planned to watch every match to be televised on two TV sports channels on this super soccer Sunday.

It's also in the soccer season of English Premier League, so I started the day with one of the PL matches: Manchester United visiting Swansea, as appetizer.

I had shared numerous times that I started playing soccer at five years old in Beijing and could have become a successful professional player if I had kept formal training in my childhood. However, I did watch thousands soccer matches either at the fields or on TV while growing up from a kid to a youngster. During those years from late 1970s to early 1990s, in my opinion, the most successful European League was Italian Serie A, mainly because Italian National Team surprisingly won the World Cup in 1982, which created soccer mania on Apennine Peninsula. Though I didn't know the detail information then, can imagine that huge investments flew into every Serie A club, so almost all super stars all over the world rushed to Italy. As a result of it, I followed Serie A the most and was amazed by those super stars' performances. However, English soccer influenced the world in those years significantly as well because England was always considered the origin of modern soccer. Manchester United was one of the English clubs I liked then. Mark Hughes was probably my most favorable Manchester United player in 1980s.

Getting into 21st Century, I didn't follow world soccer much in the first decade because there were very few matches broadcast on TV while I was living in United States. After being able to watch more live matches on TV in recent years, I figured that English Premier League might be the most influential in the world in this new era. Manchester United had been leading the league for quite a long time, so I started following it again. As we all learn that this club has been in trouble since Ferguson retired. The management seems never able to rebuild a productive elite squad though I assume they have spent a lot of money to purchase super stars in the last several years.

At the beginning of this season, they brought Championship expert, Jose Mourinho, back to England. I always evaluate him a quick fix for an underperformed elite club. It's a surprise to me that he hasn't showed the talent at Manchester United. Just like his predecessors, he also imported super stars such as Ibrahimovic and Pogba. I started paying attention to Ibra while he was playing for AC Milan several years ago. Two reasons drove me to put him as my most favorite in this decade: one was his play style being similar to Gullit who was my last most favorite in 1990s; another was that he was captain of Swedish National Team that I really admired in early 90s, especially during Euro Cup92, which was held in Sweden. Ibra had been scoring in every match at the beginning of this season but struggled recently. At age of 35, he is no longer powerful and accurate. Pogba wasn't very stable but improved. His performance in the last several matches was widely recognized.

Watching today's match, I was impressed by Pogba's first goal so much. It was a bullet shot into keeper's upper left corner. This goal led Manchester United to retain the power in this league. Ibra scored the following two goals to have his confidence rebuilt a little bit. More importantly, I was pleasant to see the big stars of this team cheering the goals together: Ibra, Rooney, Mata, Fellaini and Pogba. Manchester United owns such an invincible attacking troop, they should be a contender of Premier League Championship. Of course, I know they are still evaluating the players and will trade some of them during the window in winter, so you never know who is going to stay and who isn't.

While watching the match, I suddenly recalled that Manchester United was public traded in NYSE, so pulled the related information online to do a little bit research on it.

Glancing its financial statement, I could tell:

  • Revenue increased year over year from 320M to 515M in the last 5 years;
  • Net Income increased from 23M to 36M during the same period of time;
  • Current Assets more than doubled due to the increase of Cash & Accounts Receivable, almost no inventories;
  • PP&E kept at the same level without much additions;
  • Intangibles doubled from 112M to 244M, probably referred to copyrights and players' contracts;
  • Long Terms debt increased from 422M to 490M, pretty high;
  • Cash Flow from Operations increased from 31M to 186M
Without in-depth analysis, I only can summarize that its business is booming and generating huge positive cash flow. Expenses may be a little bit high. Debts level isn't optimal because equity financing may not be efficient. Reasonableness of Intangibles need to be retested.

However, I decide to initiate coverage of its Stock with the symbol of MANU traded in NYSE . Its current price is at the level of $15. After its quarterly earning is released on 11/10, I will publish my rating.

Sports industry is huge, I would like to see more clubs to go public, which will have their operations well financed and offer more opportunities to the investors who are also sports' fans like me.

A Tumultuous Week on Wall Street

It has been a very tumultuous week in the sense of Stock Markets, not from overall perspective but individual stocks I am following. This blog is defined as my individual one but you can consider it as the one of my business - South Archer Investing & Consulting when I write about Markets.

Twitter released 3Q earnings last Thursday, which was pretty promising: Revenue & EPS all beat the estimates and Monthly Average Users slightly increased Quarter-over-Quarter. In addition, almost all operating metrics were improved. Given massive negative views from analysts who are following it, the result was definitely a pleasant surprise. Though most of the analysts are still taking a very cautious approach, no one downplayed it. Obviously, possible turnaround is widely recognized in the investing community. Presumably, money will flow into it significantly if its Q4 result shows sustained improvements. As Chief Investment Officer of my advisory firm, I tweeted that South Archer Investing & Consulting initiated coverage, set 3-month target price at $30 and a Buy rating. The closing price today is $18.02. Why I assigned such a huge premium is that I am confident that several potential acquirers will recognize Twitter's legitimacy as a social media platform with infinite room of growth. Within three months, these acquirers will realize that they must own this promising business or it will grow into a real threat. Google, Facebook have to seriously work out their bidding process, or it would be too late to react. However, Twitter's shareholders may opt to keep it independently if that will bring in much more Return on Investment. In general, Twitter's performance in this week has brought a lot of hopes for the investors.

Zillow reported another successful quarter and outlook was lift as well. There aren't many analysts following it, at least, I didn't read many recommendations from Wall Street research firms. However, Given its leadership in this tremendous real estate sector, I always speculate it to be one of the next investing lotteries. I assigned its 3-month target price at $39 and a Buy rating. In addition, I also set its 10-year target price at $2,000. If Netflix can jump up 100 times in 14 years, so can Zillow.

When I was pursuing my MBA at University of Illinois at Chicago from 1998 to 1999, I lived in an apartment on South Archer Ave. Prior to that, I had prepared to get a graduate degree in Finance at Illinois flagship campus in Urbana-Champaign. As far as you can perceive, my academic interest during those years was in Finance. Instead of working on some part-time jobs after classes at UIC, I intensively traded stocks through a Datek online account by dialing America Online modem. Flipping hot Internet stocks, such as Amazon, Ebay, Yahoo, CMGI and America Online itself every day in the small living room in that apartment, I applied theories learned from the classes of Corporate Finance and Investment. With $20,000 capital, I did make extra money, which helped me drive around the country during Christmas break, Spring break and Summer break. I remember that the lecturer of our Corporate Finance class used to be a bond trader at Chicago Board of Exchange and the professor of Investment class had been the head research of a mutual fund for Illinois State, so we learned pretty decent practical knowledge from them. Though I had obtained a lot of concepts in Economics in my young ages academically and professionally, the knowledge I captured during that period of time in Chicago applied to US stock markets the most. To memorize the joy I had in that small apartment, I registered my one-man investment company with the name of South Archer. As I shared, my goal is to make it a tens-millions dollars hedge fund with the initial capital of one million from the compensation of my demolished property in suburban Beijing, but Chinese government has never paid me after they reached an agreement with my father for a much reduced amount several years ago. It is still an unsettled issue today and I am still waiting for this initial capital for fulfilling my plan. Other than seriously trading the stocks, I am building South Archer to be a boutique stocks' advisory firm. In this week, I published my rating guideline similar to the traditions on Wall Street: Strong Buy, Buy, Hold, Sell, Clearance. The last one is my own creation, which stands for On Sale and Short Selling. Rather than 12-month price target, I use 3-month to predict price movement in near term. For some high growth stocks, I call Investing Lotteries, I also assign a 10-year price target for each, which generally indicates dozens times higher than its current price level. For example, I predict Zillow's price to achieve $2,000 per share in 10 years, which bumps more than 50 times up.

Facebook released another strong quarterly financial report the same as many of the previous quarters. However, to stick to their ridiculous conservatism, outlook was given unfavorably. The price dropped to $120 level. In each decade, investors enjoy exponential growth on a dozen of stocks, such as Microsoft, America Online, Amazon, Netflix, etc. Facebook definitely falls into this category. However, in my opinion, its stock performance has been the most mediocre amongst these lotteries. I insist it driven by Mark Zuckerberg's own agenda, which doesn't have other shareholders' interests put on the top. Ironically, after I blamed him on Twitter yesterday, his alma mater suspended the rest of the season of their men's soccer team. I don't know whether it is  a retaliation on me. If so, I will go after Sheryl Sandberg next. This is a joke. Anyway, I think Facebook's stock price should be close to $360 now if we compare it to others in its same league historically. My recommendation on it is Strong Buy with a 3- month price target at $150 and a 10-year at $1,800. Almost every major Wall Street research outfit maintains the rating of Buy. Obviously, every analyst considers the pullback being a buying opportunity.

Gopro had a catastrophic 3rd quarter, revenue and earning per share gravely missed the targets. My immediate reaction was Armageddon or Apocalypse, whatever you exaggerate for this action camera pioneer. Last night, I assigned Clearance on it with a 3-month price target to nothing, which calls short-selling. However, I did read more disclosures today that the disastrous quarterly result was driven by the issues of productions, which were at the side of supply. Demand on its products is still pretty strong. No matter what is the real driver, I give this stock up. South Archer no longer follows it even I have never officially started the coverage.

Well, it is the end of the weekdays and the darkness prior to the dawn on weekend. I will forget everything related to my daytime job and professional interests for the next two days, only focus on watching sports and movies.

Heavy Billing Month - October

I didn't write my book tonight but had thought about recording this excitement for several days. Let me do it before going back to sleep.

October may be the heaviest month for me to paying several large bills and my goal has been always tapping the savings as minimal as I can.
My original plan was draw the payment for my son's tuition from savings entirely, which I did the end of September. Now, I expect to recover $2,000 in this month and November. In this summer, we didn't spend too much money on vacation, which did help me pay the significant bills in this month. In addition, I have been meticulously planning the spending, which almost ensures me to control family's daily cost to each cent. My parents don't spend much money, their largest cost probably is medical including Doctor's visits, Tests and Medications, but they are well covered by Medicare A, B, D and Washington State Apple Plan. I control my cost very carefully. However, I allow my son to spend whatever he wants, which was my parents doing to me when I was young. Excepts eating a lot, my son actually doesn't spend much money either.
The unexpected spending this year was $11,000 on this used Mazda-5 because I wouldn't be able to keep my 16 years old van for another two years. Though I have lost money on Twitter and Gopro in this year, I had taken opportunities to cut loss whenever they rebounded. In addition, I did make a little on Zillow. So far, I have cashed out $6,500 from my trading account. My plan is cover 11K cost on the car by drawing more toward the end of the year. Loss on trading account has one benefit, I will get tax refund for 2016 to pay my 1st half property taxes in April, 2017, then I won't need to plan too much to cover them.

Following my detail plan combined with savings for my son's educational expenses, everything should be covered through May, 2018 if there isn't any surprise when he graduates his bachelor degree from University of Washington. This plan will also cover a cross country vacation and a Jeep Compass for my son next summer.

The bigger spending will come after if my son goes to law school:

  • At the least expense of $160,000 to cover everything if he goes to UW Law School;
  • At the most expense of $280,000 to cover everything if he goes to Yale Law School.
However, if this happens, I will sell my rental townhouse in 2019 to cover everything for him. If he can get scholarship, it will somewhat help. He wants to go to other State for his graduate studies, which inevitably will increase the cost.

I feel very comfortable for my life if everything goes as planned. The worst case scenario will be that I can start doing whatever I want in January, 2022 when my son gets a lawyer's position in public sector with a salary of $60,000. He may make $160,000 if becoming an attorney in private sector.

I am so motivated to spend my time everyday no matter if it is at work doing everything or at home doing nothing, because I have a solid plan for my life, which is very achievable.

By the way, I may have a lot of pleasant surprises because my plan is the most conservative. Yes, I am very lazy.

Huskies Taking Ducks in Eugene

The success of Washington Huskies is credited to their trophy coach Chris Peterson first. It sounded he refined the definition of "Men" for the team.

Of course, Matt, the former Heisman Trophy winner could assess Jake Browning very well. What his point was Browning being a decisive factor to helping Washington sticking with National Champ.

The former Pitts and Dolphin coach made the comment on Ducks' QB.
While uploading the clip I just snapped through my Gopro Hero 4, I keep updating this pre-game blog. It looks like a very sunny evening in Eugene and will be fantastic experiences for the fans of college football.

The game is more critical for Washington Huskies because they must keep winning all the games to get into College Football playoff and may contend National Championship in early January, 2017.

Another Wonderful Weekend

It's been another wonderful weekend but again, was too short. I wish I could make my every day a weekend: Watch sports and movies, go to gym to workout, write books, review theories of mathematics for my economic modelings.

Husky Stadium was packed by 72, 027 fans on Friday night, so nothing else needs to be elaborated. Huskies crushed Cardinals and ranks 5th on AP Poll as well as 6th on Coaches Poll. How come do coaches discount Huskies?
Baseball fans cheered for Mariners to keep coming back last night to keep the playoff hope alive. They lost in extra inning and were eliminated after such a wonderful baseball night at Safeco Field.

Sleeping enough hours, I didn't turn on TV to watch Premier League this morning. Going to Lynnwood High School to practice soccer at 8:30am, I found all the fields were locked. I miss those days during summer break, no one used the field, so I could run through it freely because most of the time I was the only person there especially in early morning on weekends.

Seahawks beat Jets easily at Metlife Stadium, I fell into sleep from time to time in the first half, missed the first two TDs Seahawks made. Wilson started and played very well despite injured ankle.

Going to gym to workout an hour, I had done it two-day-in-row. I need to resume it every night during weekday. So I plan to arrive at work at 7:00am, then come back home at 4:30pm. After dinner and taking rest, I will go to work out at 8pm, then come back home to write my book for an hour, finally go to bed at 11pm.

Sounders beat Whitecaps in Vancouver, now they are most likely to secure a seat in playoff again. I hope they can win MLS Cup.
Writing Chapter IV for an hour, I won't be able to finish this chapter until Wednesday night.

Google is hiring advisor for acquiring Twitter. I always believe Google is the most strategic player in this game. Facebook insists on growing Instagram, otherwise it would be another right fit. Users can share their thoughts and opinions on Twitter in real time, then update the detail in their Google blog to elaborate. This is only one of the thousand examples why Google bidding for Twitter makes perfect sense.

Ok, I am really tired and need to sleep...

Weekend too short

Massive killings in Burlington on Friday night bothered me too much. I checked online to try to find out any updates whenever I woke up. Watching PL matches in the morning, I didn't go to gym before lunch but went there to work out for an hour in the afternoon.

Watching Huskies game on Saturday night, Mariners game at Twin Cities on Sunday, Sounders match in Carson and Seahawks game at Centurylink Field, of course all on TV, I was so thrilled that all Seattle teams won.

Sunday was my son Ricky's 21 years old birthday, and he had moved back to his dorm at UW on last Friday. After Seahawks game, I drove to his dorm to pick him up because I planned to drive him to Feast Buffet close to our office building in Renton. In Europe, the drinking ages are much younger and in China it has never been enforced, but in US, he was only allowed to do it on and after this birthday. He drank a bottle of sake while eating a lot of foods.

Dropping him back to his dorm, I went back home pretty late and tired, so didn't write anything for my book this weekend.

It's 9:50pm on Monday now, I started writing Chapter IV - At the Sea half an hour ago but won't write more tonight. Pat and Kristina will be on the ship from Hirtshals to Bergen while recalling the two nights both families staying together in Paris in 2012. I didn't write Kristina and Antonio's 1990 US East Coast trip in Chapter III, so will capture it in Chapter IV. In addition, I may add Pat's visiting Chicago and NYC in X'mas 87 in this chapter as well.

Recently, I repeatedly listened Hosanna, which inspires me so much. However, I found another song by Hillsong: Across the Earth, is equally inspirational.
OK, I will go to sleep in ten minutes but write 2,000 words every night to wrap up Chapter IV on Friday...

Thunderstorm

Yesterday, on my road back home, I heard on the radio a thunderstorm hit Bothell. Arriving at home, I caught it from my dad that the earlier thunderstorm washed our neighborhood very hard. I wasn't sure if it only fell down in our area. Anyway, I didn't notice that in Renton while I was in the office.

It triggered me to recall the harsh thunderstorm to hold me returning the rental car at Arlanda in last July. As soon as I walked out of the airport where the hotel was located, the harsh rains dropped.
Today, I found this website following my blog.
Don't be mad, that will be just a novel.
As promised, I will be living in those three places for a year... Let's shoot for...2026.

Weekend to be gone

It's the last two hours before the weekend is gone. I meant, in two hours, the clock will hit midnight.

I am not sure if I achieved a lot during this weekend: Driving my dad to buy Chinese grocery while my son and I picked up other stuff at Costco. Then we had a delicious spicy lunch at Sichuan Garden in Lynnwood. Watching Sounders overcoming Whitecaps, Huskies crashing Vikings, I baked Ribs in the oven my son picked for late dinner on Saturday night.

Sleeping from time to time this morning, I didn't go to gym as planned. Seahawks lost to Rams in LA, which wasn't a surprise to me. Actually, on Friday night, it was raining relatively hard, which gave me a chance to check if the leak was fixed by Chris two week ago. I forgot to mention that I asked him to help check it out after my dad said to me there could be leak on the ceiling in their toilet, part of their big bathroom attached to master bedroom. Harsh rains two-day-in-row might cause the issue then. Chris climbed onto our roof to check but didn't see the problem, he filled some stuff up around the ventilation fan. As today's proof, he fixed it. Super.
I wasn't able to finish Chapter III of my book but will wrap it up by Tuesday night as far as I can estimate the progress. As I said, the majority of the scenes was in Bologna and New England back in 1990, in addition to nowadays in Denmark. I had written 8,000 words for this chapter so far, 2,000 more to go as planned.
Ok, I am about to go to bed pretty soon. I have steam pressed all five shirts and pants for the next week, so no more needs to be done tonight.

Weekend in front of eyes

Finally, we all see Weekend just in front of eyes. EPL, MLS, NFL, NCAA are on the pipeline. Mariners are getting into Wildcard race tightly, so I may watch their games during this weekend.
Of course, I plan to finish Chapter III of my book - Return Scandinavia by Sunday night. It will describe Pat and Nana driving through Denmark while retroactively telling the stories having happened in Bologna and New England in later 80s before they met in 92.

The other night I shared a part of Chapter II of which actually was rewriting of my post in Chinese on my blog on Sina almost ten years ago. It described a scene in winter 2006 at Arlanda. So, I don't need to remind the readers it nothing related to anyone or anything I even hadn't known back then.
Ok, Drinking up Coors Light and Taking a nap, then get up to write. Weekend is delicious, even Friday night is juicy too...

A productive and entertaining weekend

Friday was very hot but the temperature dropped significantly on Saturday morning. I watched two English Premier League matches and witnessed Manchester United to win their third matches in this reason. After lunch, I took a little bit rest, then went to Lynnwood High School to practice soccer for an hour, then observed a teens' football game on its formal turf at the back of the school. For the rest of the day, I started writing Day One - En Route Kastrup of my new book and finished a quarter of what I planned to write for this first chapter.

Weather kept cool on Sunday morning, I watched Manchester City winning over West Ham 3 to 1. The City's players worked very well together. Their efficient short passes were similar to what Barcelona's players could make several years ago. Not going to work out today, I slept a little bit before Sounders' match started. Timbers crashed Sounders in the first half. As I tweeted, only keeping loyalty to myself ensured me to enjoy this Sunday afternoon by watching a wonder offense. Sounders caught up a little bit at Timbers' mercy in the second half. It's not too bad they didn't lose 10 goals in this match.
At one point of time, my son came into my bedroom to announce that he had caught how Logical Games worked of LSAT and sounded very confident in getting a great score in October, 2017. He had thoroughly reviewed 320 pages. My projection on him is to get 170 at LSAT and bump his GPA up to 3.3, then he will go to Georgetown Law Center in Fall, 2018, though I prefer him staying with UW Law School, then I don't need to sell the townhouse but just simply give it to him. His life will be very comfortable after graduating with a JD/MBA at Washington. Of course, if he can score 175 and improve GPA to 3.5, he may go to Yale. Who knows?
Until half an hour ago, I had been writing another quarter of Day One - En Route Kastrup and had finished 12 pages with 5,000 words over this weekend. As I shared, my plan is to write this book with 200,000 words. If I can keep fine-tuning 2,000 words per night, which isn't too unrealistic, then I may finish the entire book by Christmas. I have been moved by the stories while writing, I hope you will too.
I need to fall into sleep as quickly as possible because I plan to be on road at 5AM tomorrow, then I will come back early to drive my son to Everett Clinic to have his right eyeball checked because of that white dot. However, he said it apparently shrank a lot but still wanted to use this opportunity to have his eyes checked, which he hadn't it done for a year.

Leavenworth

It's not a perfect road trip over last weekend, I lost my watch I just bought the monday before the last after my Jury Duty at Everett Municipal Court. I can't remember where I could forget to pick the watch up in the morning. It might be in Walla Walla or Leavenworth.

However, it was a pleasant trip anyway. In addition to all Periscope live videos I had shared in Walla Walla, I really enjoyed the night spent in Leavenworth. Having a super Munich Lager, I drank it all and felt so cool. The only consequence was to sleep until 2:30 in the morning after going back to the hotel room.
German Wursts were huge but I ate both all as well. My son ordered Rahm, a German speciality. The waitress laughed at him how he still could order a chocolate cake afterwards. However, he is a big eater. To accommodate him, I had Vanilla Ice Cream.
After leaving Leavenworth, we went through Stevens Pass. Since the road was relatively rough, I put Gopro on to make a clip.
We don't have a big plan for this summer, so just took two short road trips in the last two months for my son's summer break. One was to go to Oregon in July, and another was this one to cruising through East Washington. Before my son goes back to his dorm to start his Junior Year in the final week in September, we will take another weekend road trip to Olympic Peninsula. My son told me yesterday he already wanted to go back to school to enjoy campus life... Oh, too bad, he just came into my reading room to tell me a white spot embedded on his right eyeball with which he didn't know what it was. I will have to make a doctor appointment for him tomorrow.

My Plan

As I shared, my son will go to law school in 2018. I hope he can make his dream of going to Georgetown to be true but still think UW Law School being his best choice. However, if he wants to jump onto national stage at young ages, Georgetown is more promising for sure.

In addition to my job, I do have several plans for myself. Though I have had some issues since early 2000 after settling in Seattle in late 1990s, I have been working out regularly and keeping diets relatively healthy in the last several years. According to life expectancy for my generation, I still expect to live until 85. If I can retire at 60, I plan to start my fourth career of my life until 80 years old if I can keep up with my current energy level.

So, what will my fourth career be?

Closely related to my current profession, my first plan is to finish PhD in Economics at age of 63 I started 25 years ago but never progressed, then become a professor while publishing my own books and papers;

My alternative plan in this regard is to get my CFA I started in 2000 and resumed in 2010 but never finished charted before my retirement, then become a full time stock trader by running my own investment LLC while playing an active role in this industry in terms of presenting, educating and communicating my theories and practices in conferences;

I believe being a writer is always my natural talent. This plan can be implemented today and I will become a full time professional after ten years. As you already read, I had posted a memoir type of story of Sometime in Scandinavia in the past several years but never finished. I have been thinking in the last two months about to start enriching it into a 200, 000 words novel and even wrote a Table of Content several weeks ago. Tonight, after taking a long rest since this afternoon, I finished Prologue. Since I can't publish a book, which has been posted in public domain, I changed its name a little bit. The main stream of the story will still be driving through Scandinavian Peninsula clockwise, but 90% of the contents will cover almost entire of 1990s and the past 10 years (Don't worry, it won't relate to anyone or anything specifically in my regular daily life because the scenes will be mainly in Europe) and it will be much more fictional. I am shooting for publishing it by the end of October, hopefully you will buy one to read. Who knows can't it be turned a best-seller and moved onto big screen because it won't be only about romance? You will learn much more genres from this book...

Epilogue
In Copenhagen, you may want to drink Carlsberg but in Stockholm, I tended to order Eriksberg. Every time, when the leading male character of my book was sitting by Kungsgatan drinking Eriksberg, he always expected her to come over to pull another chair and apologized: "Sorry, I am late", then argued: "But this is the only time I am." Yes, that was the only time she was.

My focus in the next five years

As I shared that my son made his decision of going to law school, so his future is almost determined. According to his progresses academically, I project he should be able to be admitted to one of the top 40 law schools. In addition to five targets of Yale, Duke, Georgetown, UW and UNC, I will recommend him to apply five more to sum up to Ten when he starts his application process in 2017.

The cost of JD is one of the most expensive amongst all academic degrees, it ranges from 180K to 300K including everything. In the next five years, my focus as a father is to make sure that he won't shoulder the heavy student loan to force him to desperately pursue big bucks right after the graduation.

First of all, I hope the housing market won't go down, then my rental townhouse will cover my son even he goes to Yale. I either can borrow home equity loan or sell it. According to the most current Zestimate, it may be sold at 275K next summer and could be at 300K in 2020 per my extrapolation when I possibly need to sell it. Anyway, I bought this townhouse in 2006 at the peak, couldn't be happier that it is even little bit profitable now.
Though relying on this rental property exclusively will have covered all of my son's law school cost already, to make my own life easier, I will focus on investment in the next five years to make sure to maximize the returns. Since I created SeaPower Index in May, it has increased by 9% at the market close of last Friday. As a small investor, the performance might be too mediocre. But assuming you are running a 1 million dollars' index fund as a wealthy individual investor, you have pocketed 90,000 bucks less than 3 months. Simply annualizing the return by 4 times, your family's total return for the year will be 360K. Not everyone could build up a million dollars' portfolio, me neither, but the investing concept is the same and this SeaPower index fund is very conservative with low risks. If you are willing to take more risks, you don't need to invest so much money.
Most of these stocks' prices in this index almost hit 50 weeks' high now, so I expect to see a little bit of retreats in the next month or so. However, toward the end of the year, most of them will hit new high's. I don't own any of them in my portfolio but do like ALK. I actually sold one of my holdings in my portfolio before its earning release and expect its price to go down another 10% before October. Then, I will buy back to shoot for 75% gain by 12/31/2016.

The reason I like ALK is that its P/E is down below 10 and domestic travel will increase significantly given the downward of international travels. We should see tourism in US to surge during the holiday season.
As I mentioned to many of my friends, being an average middle class family, everyone of us has to make the choice amongst all consumptions because we are not able to buy everything we want. It's why I am so happy to spend only 10,000 bucks to buy this 2009 model Mazda-5 with 55,000 miles on it. I plan to drive it for eight years. It will be a big test for it when we will be on a cross country road trip in next summer: Starting from Bothell to Chapel Hill, then along Atlantic Coast to Key West. Coming back home through Southern States but won't go to Southern Cal this time.
If my son can get scholarship all law schools generally offer, that will be great. However, I don't rely on it because my parents were always frugal to themselves to satisfy my needs when I was young, why can't I do it for my son? Even the majority of future proceeds from my rental townhouse came from my parents originally because they sold their apartments in Beijing at deep discounts compared to today's prices when they immigrated to US 9 years ago, so I feel very normally to use it to pay for my son's cost in the next several years. Of course, if your parents didn't treat you so generously, you have the reasons not to do it for your children.It's fair and cultures are different.
However, one crucial factor I didn't mention is that I am always able to have a meaningful full time job no matter when and where, which can ensure me to plan everything else calmly.

My son's motivation

My son Ricky has been motivated by his goal of going to law school since the the beginning of the summer break. He first made the decision of pursuing major in English and minor in Philosophy, both would help him become a great law school student. Then, per my suggestion, he started studying and practicing 5 pages of Kaplan LSAT reference book every day. The total pages of this book are 1,000 and so far, he has finished almost 200 pages. According to his schedule, he will complete it thoroughly by the end of February in 2017 at the latest. Before taking LSAT in October, he will have 7 months to intensively improve his testing skills. His targeted score is 170 and I am confident in him. Meanwhile, he has been working out four hours everyday because he realizes that a strong body will ensure him to be energized to achieve his goal.

Checking out top 50 law schools, I outlined the targets for him:

No. 1 target: Yale. It's very difficult for him to be admitted but you never know, he will apply it anyway. A JD from Yale will almost guarantee his success in future.
No. 2 target: Duke. He may have 30% chance to be admitted and I really hope he can enroll their program. A JD from Duke may bring him into a big law firm in East Coast after graduation immediately.
No. 3 target: Georgetown. He has a big chance to be admitted and he really wants to go there because he seems very interested in the circle in DC. A JD from Georgetown will send him into Washington politics at young ages.
No. 4 target: University of Washington. It's his alma mater and has the most economic value for him. Though its law school ranks much lower than Georgetown, due to its domination and popularity in Northwest and its competitiveness amongst Washington State residents, it may be even more difficult to be admitted. A JD from Washington will help him become a rising political star from his home State and keep his personal life to be easier.
No. 5 target: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He should be able to get this one as a Out-of-state applicant. A JD from UNC should help him start building his political career in that State. The reason I recommend him to go there other than other States is that his maternal uncle's family is there, so he will have an extended family there if he can't live in Washington State any more.
He has been watching both Parties' National Conventions enthusiastically and paying attention to Clinton and Trump with full interests. He seems very serious in pursuing a public servant's career eventually. I hope Mr. Ricky He will become Secretary of State one day since he won't be qualified of being elected as President.
During the lunch today, I recommended him a plan of 3 main focus in his last two years of undergraduate studies:

  • Awarded a Bachelor of Arts in English/Philosophy in May, 2018 with GPA of 3.5;
  • Score 170 of LSAT in October, 2017;
  • Build up athletic body by keeping intensive workout everyday.
In addition, he should take care of other two things in his life if possible:
  • Attend more social activities to enrich public experiences;
  • Find a girlfriend who really fits into his life.
Let's see how he will do, I am very interested in observing his progresses. However, supporting his goal of going to law school is not to expect him to make big bucks but earn all academic credentials in his 20s. I don't really mind if he will only make 50K as a public servant after graduating a JD at Yale.

Patrick's Diary - 7/13/2016

Counting the days away from this long weekend,
Booking the room prior to my fiftieth birthday.
Planning a night right before heading to Ashland,
Targeting a hotel in Bend to check in on Friday.
Thinking about to appreciate the ocean again,
Changing mind to switch to east of Interstate,
Going to Oregon Coast once a year for real fun,
Shifting to inland mountains this July to dance.
Receiving notifications for Centennial four times,
Selecting second to the last show on Sunday night.
Expecting to be back before its kickoff by hours,
Hoping to catch more in this spectacular event.
Reading a tweet to learn Sounders at Centurylink,
Enjoying five goals to beat Dallas during the week.

Patrick's Diary - 7/12/2016

Leaving the office three hours after twelve o'clock,
Approaching the dealership twenty minutes to five.
Missing the entrance so much by almost one mile,
Taking a U-turn in time before at the service desk.
In the exhibition room awaiting technician to check,
In the show sections observing new models to shine,
At the coffee ATM making two cups of vanilla latte,
Outside the sliding door finding my wagon to hook.
Free car wash being a lifetime wonderful benefit,
Headlight replacement being one time at no charge,

Regular maintenance to be taken care of by Dennis.
Four hours workout becoming my son's daily event,
Five pages review becoming everyday LSAT routine,
One Hundred Seventy to send him to top twenties.
